Work in Progress

As the organ was dismantled its condition became more evident. There was damage to some of the pipes, in part due to poor access for tuning. The pneumatic action, which was certainly not original to the instrument was in poor shape.

Organs at St Gregory’s

Sat at the console in this picture is Dr John Rowntree, organ advisor to the Diocese of Northampton. With the front panel removed a board is visible which supported the pneumatic action. Each key is connected to the soundboard by a lead pipe, and air pressure in this pipe controls wind being admitted to the pipes which actually make the sound.

However there was also evidence that this replaced an earlier tracker (ie purely mechanical) action. No clear evidence is available as to when this was done, but the nature of the work suggests a date in the 1920s.

The restored instrument will have an electro-pneumatic action.
