Work in Progress

The Wind in the Bellows

Organs at St Gregory’s

On Tuesday 28th April a significant milestone was reached as the bellows were filled with wind, and the first pipe was heard to speak! It was not a particularly spectacular sound - the bottom C of the Bourdon - but it was a significant occasion.

The first filling with wind initially showed where leaks were. It would have been astonishing if there had been none, but they were few and easily sorted.

Also the wiring in the chamber is making good progress. Until this is complete it will be impossible to test the electric and electronic systems.

On top of the bellows is a large box containing iron filings, and a variety of lead weights. It is these that regulate the air pressure.

Also visible are a couple of the cables which connect to the soundboards. These will be clipped up and carried in trunking to the chamber computer where the control signals from the console are decoded.

Just at the edge of the picture is Steve Taylor who has done much of the work in the chamber. He is planning a celebratory weekend, having a significant birthday. Enjoy!
