The pipes arrive!

Organs at St Gregory’s

On Monday 27th April the pipes arrived. This photo shows the three biggest pipes, from the 8 foot Open Diapaison on the Great. The majority of the pipes are stored in wooden boxes for their protection as they are very fragile.

The time for the installation of the pipes has not yet come; there is still more work to be done to the electrical circuits and other parts in the gallery.

These large pipes are made of zinc which is less expensive than the mixture of tin and lead which is used for smaller pipes. At the pitch at which these pipes sound, the human ear cannot distingush much of the tonal quality. Very low notes are more felt than actually heard.

Most of the metal pipes in this organ are "Spotted Metal", which is a nearly 50:50 mix of lead and tin; these are the highest quality pipes.
