One of the difficulties with the instrument
in its location at Grazeley was that access to the Swell box for tuning
required standing on the pedal soundboards, which resulted in serious
damage to some of the pipes. In the re-build, there will be new soundboards
for the Bourdon and the Violoncello stops, arranged to avoid this problem.
The inner workings of the Bourdon soundboard are shown in this picture.
The complexity of the mechanism to get wind into the pipes is staggering!
Meanwhile, the date for demolition of the
present organ draws near. We are expecting to begin this work on February
9th (1 week away). |
