Work in Progress

This picture shows the inside of the swell box before dismantling at Grazeley.

Organs at St Gregory’s

The new swell box will be enlarged to make room for the new Trompette stop which will compliment the existing tonal colours, as well as considerably enlarging the repertoire of the instrument.

The stops will be:
Viole de Gamba (8ft)
Rohr Flute (8ft)
Aeolian (8ft)
Gemshorn (4ft)
Flauto Traverso (4ft)
Piccolo (2ft)
Trompette (8ft)
Tremulant

8ft stops sound at normal pitch, 4ft stops an octave higher.

The Hohl Flute on the Swell is clearly different from the stop of the same name on the Great - there are no wooden triangular pipes in the Swell box! Sometimes a similar sound can be produced in more than one way. But the art of stop naming is one which has changed over the years - and is still changing! What matters is the sound of the stop, and its contribution to the overall sound of the instrument in combination with other stops.
