2008 is the bi-centenary of the birth at Wootton of Caroline Chisholm (below). She is greatly honoured in Australia where in the nineteenth century she did social and humanitarian work, especially caring for women immigrants. Her early life was in Northampton, becoming a Catholic here on marriage, and it is in Billing Road cemetery in our parish that she is buried. It is hoped that in 2008 Pope Benedict may initiate the first steps in the process of her Beatification. Here we see Canon Phillips tending her grave in 1977, the centenary of her death. The UCM looked after the grave for many years. The new school at Wootton named after Caroline will now take on the task.

On May 30 2008, on which day Caroline Chisholm was born 200 years before, a group of parishioners led by Father Andrew pray at her grave in Billing Road cemetery.
